Properties & Uses

Ground calcium carbonate: Natural calcium carbonate ores are high in chemical and mineralogical purity and are wet or dry, ground to a wide range of products. Dry-ground calcium carbonates, comprising nominal 200 to 325 mesh products, are among the least pricey white fillers available. They are simply crushed from ore but may also be beneficiated by air separation. Wet-ground fine and ultra fine products are also sold in 75% solids slurry form for high volume paint and paper applications and in stearic acid- and stearate-treated forms for use in polymers.

Precipitated calcium carbonate: Precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) is produced for applications requiring any combination of higher brightness, smaller particle size, greater surface area, lower abrasiveness, and higher purity than is generally available from ground natural products. In the India. PCC is most commonly made by the carbonation process. Limestone controlled forcolouring oxides (e.g. of Mn and Fe) is calcined to calcium oxide and carbon dioxide. The calcium oxide (burnt lime) is then slaked with water to form calcium hydroxide (milk of lime). The carbon dioxide liberated on calcining is then reintroduced to precipitate calcium carbonate. Manipulation of process variables determines particle size and shape, surface area, and whether the product is isomorphous calcite or a cicular aragonite. PCC products are also made by the lime-soda process, where milk of lime is reacted with sodium.

Coated Calcium Carbonate Powder:

Coated Calcium Carbonate Powder is highly compatible with polymers than bare calcium carbonate and  therefore it is used as fillers in  rubber, plastic, paint, textile and sealant industries. Even though talc has a major position in plastics, it is losing market share to coated calcium carbonate, especially stearate coated fine 1-μm to 3-μm products. Coated Calcium Carbonates provide impact resistance but little stiffness. They work well in applications where the finished product is low in price and disposable, such as plastic grocery bags.

Activated Calcium Carbonate Powder:

Activated calcium carbonate is produced by surface coating the precipitated calcium carbonate slurry (a semi-liquid mixture) with fatty acids (stearic acid – a solid saturated fatty acid obtained from animal or vegetable fats) and titanate(a salt in which the anion contains both titanium and oxygen, in particular one of the anion TiO32−) coupling agent then filtering and drying of the coated pcc slurry to produce acc powder. The particle size, crystal form is specifically controlled by temperature, concentration of reactants and other process parameters. Activated Calcium Carbonate Powder is highly effective, precisely formulated, accurate composition. It is mainly used in plastic industry, pharmaceuticals, rubber industry, cosmetics, paints, printing ink, sealants and mastics.

Calcium carbonate to calcium oxide

Calcium carbonate is insoluble in water and stable at normal temperatures. When heated to high temperatures, it decomposes to form calcium oxide with the release of carbon dioxide.
