Friction, brake lining and brake pads

Ashok Mineral Enterprises.

We are an Industrial Mineral Manufacturing company headquartered in Chennai, India. We source and produce high-quality Industrial Minerals which are used as raw material in the friction manufacturing Industry. Our top products for the manufacturing of brake lining, pads and other brake components are Bentonite, Hematite, Quartz or Silica, Graphite, Kaolin or Clay, Barite or Barytes, etc.,

Here is our extensive list of products for the friction, brake lining and brake pad manufacturers

Bentonite

Bentonite is used as a binder for imparting green strength or handling strength in Abrasive grinding wheels which are used for surface modification, polishing, deburring, sanding and finishing.

Hematite

Hematite or Iron Oxide, a red-brown-colored mineral acts as a mild abrasive. Hematite has a Moh’s hardness of 5 to 6.5 which means it is a relatively hard material. This property allows Hematite to be used for smoothing and polishing of surfaces of solid materials.

Quartz / Silica

Silica powder or Quartz is broadly used as an inorganic friction raw material filler. Silica powder improves the friction products’ wear resistance, as well as the friction coefficient. Silica has a high Mohs scale of hardness, therefore for the brake manufacturing process Silica needs to be ground into very small particles, usually up to 200 mesh or even 325 mesh otherwise, its hardness will scrape the mating plates and produce brake noise.

Graphite

Natural amorphous or fine flake graphite is used in brake linings or brake shoes for heavier (non-automotive) vehicles. Today, Natural Graphite is becoming more and more important with the need to substitute for asbestos. Graphite has a very low co-efficient of friction. This is owing to its lamellar or sheet-like arrangement of its molecule. Within a sheet the molecules are closely bonded, but between sheets the bond is weak. This allows the sheets to slide over one another without the molecules falling separately. In Brake lining, the principal advantage of graphite is its high compressive and tensile strength and low coefficient of friction which together result in low wear rate (Example – ice on steel has a low coefficient of friction – the two materials slide past each other easily – while rubber on pavement has a high coefficient of friction – the materials do not slide past each other easily).

Kaolin / China Clay / Hydrous Clay

Kaolin or China clay is used for its properties such as high water absorption, plasticity, strong cohesive force, high refractoriness, good insulation, chemical stability and good sintering performance. Kaolin in the composition of friction materials, can reduce the brake noise and reduce the heat recession.

Mica

Mica is an organic raw material and it has natural mineral properties which make it ideal as a dielectric insulator while being both hardwearing but also highly adaptable. It provides thermal protection that is essential to friction materials in the automotive industry and it is used in brake and anti-friction components.

Talc

Talc can be used as a solid lubricant. Talc forms transfer films on metal surfaces to reduce friction and wear.

Dolomite

Dolomite is used in friction material as a stable friction coefficient. Dolomite can also improve process performance, the wear resistance of friction material, and reduce the cost because it is fairly cheaper when compared to other fillers.

Calcined Petroleum Coke

CPC or Calcined Petroleum Coke has always been a major constituent of brake pads and is the base of the mechanical strength and an optimal “carrier” for other ingredients. Due to its relative hardness, CPC is responsible for the base coefficient of friction (CoF). Usually relatively coarse CPC is used, but very fine grades can also be used as a “soft” abrasive and cleaning material in some formulas.

Carbon black

Carbon black is used as friction material inorganic filler. It can reduce the friction coefficient and enhance the friction stability and wear resistance. It also reduces the braking noise at the same time. Owing to its low mohs hardness, it also can contribute to anti-friction.

Petroleum Coke

Pet Coke is used as a friction material inorganic filler. It can reduce the friction coefficient, and enhance the friction stability and wear resistance, reducing the braking noise at the same time. Since its low mohs hardness, it also can contribute to anti-friction.

Barite / Barium Sulphate / Baryte

Barium Sulphate also known as Barite or Baryte is a stable filler. It guarantees the safety of products due to no harmful substances. Furthermore, it has acid resistance, alkali resistance, and high temperature resistance without losing gloss, and perfect weather resistance. Brake pad grade barite with high purity can enhance the strength of the automotive parts and resistance to acids and alkalis of the automotive parts.

Calcium Hydroxide/Hydrated Lime

Ca(OH)2 or Hydrated Lime is used to avoid corrosion in Fe-additives.  Calcium Hydroxide helps raise fade temperatures.

Calcium Carbonate

Calcium carbonate increases the durability of sealants and improves the ride through noise reduction. Calcite is a low cost alternative to Barytes, but not quite as stable as Barytes at high temperatures.
